Peltekians Take the PNW: Day 4

Portland was warm.  Portland was pretty.  Portland was… weird.  They don’t lie about that fun little fact.  We had a lot of recommendations for food, which was obviously fine by me.  But other than that, we weren’t really sure what to do with ourselves.  So with a couple tourist pamphlets and Google Maps in hand, we headed out for some exploring.

Our first stop was about 1/2 an hour outside of town, but the photos in the pamphlet guaranteed a worthwhile trip.  We ended up in Oregon City to see the spectacular, largest falls in the PNW – Willamette Falls!! With that description, I was anticipating the next Niagara.

Well, ok.  Maybe not so much.

Since we were already in Oregon City, we decided to stop at the End of the Oregon Trail Historic Site.  Not a ton to see there, but kinda fun to say we’ve been.  Paul and I reminisced about the old Oregon Trail computer game.  We can only hope Stevie will someday have the pleasure of playing that 8-bit awesomeness.

Back in Portland, we took a walk, saw our first drawbridge in action, and spent some time by the riverfront.

After some lunch, and (another) quick nap, we went to Pittock Mansion for the sunset.  The grounds were so beautiful, with pops of Autumn showing up and friendly dogs getting their evening exercise.  We followed signs to the viewpoint, which led to a pleasant surprise. We had no idea this place even existed, so I was glad it turned out to be so nice.

We drove around the city streets for awhile, knowing we didn’t want to go to bed yet, but not really sure what we wanted to do.  We had our gas pumped by a nice young man (literally) and then – surprise, surprise – ate some more.

Pine State Biscuits might have been my favorite meal of the entire trip.  Paul and I split a plate, so we wouldn’t overdo it.  But boy oh boy.  That was some yummy stuff.  Then to satisfy the sweet tooth, we accidentally came upon a vegan bakery right across the street.  Vegan stuff everywhere in that town.  I helped myself to my first ever vegan milkshake.  Not exactly like the real thing, but probably as close as it could get. It’s been over 2 years since I’ve had a milkshake, so I wasn’t complaining.  Holler at me Portland.

  1. Something about Stevie’s and Paul’s red and blue sneakers make their pictures adorable.

    1. No they had more than one flavor, we had cookies and cream (just no real dairy)
