Luck O' the Birds

This weekend was one that I am not mentally prepared for to be over.  Sure, nobody ever really wants Monday to roll around, but when you’re busy, the days all sort of blend together and what difference does it make if it’s Monday anyway?  That’s been life for several months.

But this weekend!  Oh this glorious weekend started with only one (!) thing on the calendar – I had a client meeting in Oxnard.  Which turned into a client meeting on Skype and saved me 3 hours of driving time. Bonus points x’s 1000.

So we spent our newly freed hours going out to eat and running errands together.  When you’re a grown up, isn’t the fun stuff so lame?

We were bringing groceries in the house when all of a sudden, out of my hanging planter, a pretty good-sized bird dramatically flew towards Paul’s head and startled the hell outta outta him.  I probably laughed at him and I didn’t think much of it, but when Paul peeked into the planter, he saw 2 little eggs!

for the home, lucky birds, bird eggs, springfor the home, lucky birds, bird eggs, springThis actually happened around the same time last year too.  I was watering my plants and didn’t see the bird, accidentally scaring her away.  They are surprisingly camouflaged! She abandoned her egg and after I read that they rarely do that,  I really felt terrible.

So I was glad that this bird returned and has been faithfully sitting on the eggs ever since.  I was reading more about them and they are really sweet.  Mourning doves, or turtledoves, are very dedicated parents. They partner up and actually take shifts sitting on the eggs all day and night.  Mama first, then Papa.  They seem to understand now that we are not going to hurt them, though they watch us like a couple hawks every time we enter and exit the front door.  They look so paranoid with their big black eyes watching our every move, I have to laugh.

I’ve heard that some cultures look at birds as a sign of good luck, which draws me to the conclusion that li’l baby birds gotta be luck + more luck, don’t you think?  So we are tiptoeing around these guys for the next month, hoping they disperse plenty of that good juju all over our house.

I just have to find a way to warn the mailman.

  1. Yes it is good luck! I love Mourning Doves and their sweet coo coo coo sound. We had a pair in Alabama right before we left that I took as I sign of good luck.

  2. What a joy! I love watching those Mama and Papa birds taking turns…now wait for the feedings! We think we had it bad nursing, but how would you like to upchuck all those yummy worms …. 🙂
