Spring Capsule Wardrobe Update

I’m about 6 weeks into my Spring Capsule, which leaves about 6 weeks to go.  This seems like a good point in the season to analyze where I’m at and make sure I’m getting the most out of my wardrobe.

I have a few pieces that are not working for me.  Yes, I might have gained a few pounds since last Spring when these items were packed away (SHHHH).  And the weather is playing tricks on me, as it does most seasons.  And I even wore out one of my t-shirts (or a moth got to it.)  So I’ve had to swap and replace a couple things. A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do.

Here’s an update on what I’m using most and what has got to go.

mom style, capsule wardrobe, minimalist wardrobe, spring, outfits

NOT WORN YET: I started this capsule with about 40 pieces and there are only 3 things I haven’t worn. Not bad!  I feel like that means I’m figuring out my style!  Kinda!  I’m not sure what I’ll do with those 3 items.  I meeean, I really love those boots…  So maybe store them for Fall…  The peplum top and striped cardigan are likely to hit the donation bag.

SWAPPED: My striped tee had a hole in it, so I took it as an opportunity to swap it for one like this, with a less bold pattern and a shorter hemline.  It just felt a little more modern.  My white jeans were flat-out too uncomfortable, so I got myself some loose linen pants.  Probably not as cool, but they will be worn more than tight jeans. Because donuts.

ADDED: The chambray romper (now 50% off!!) and floral track shorts were on my original shopping list for Spring, but it took me awhile to find them at the right price.  The leather sandals were an impulse buy. Oops. But all the new items have been worn a handful of times already, so I still feel good about ’em.

MOST WORN: And obviously, these are the winners in my closet.  Congrats, clothes!!  That gray tank goes with everything and cost like $6, so it comes out to $1.10 per wear.  (So far.)  And what can I say about the Birks and army jacket?  They’re on heavy rotation.  My blue shirt has also proven to be so versatile.  It’s one of those that can look easy and casual or a little more polished, so it’s a good staple to have.  Last, but not least, my Madewell jeans – the most expensive jeans I ever purchased – have proven to be worth the investment.  Perfect mid-rise waist and perfect amount of stretch.  If I’m grabbing jeans in the morning, these are it.

To be honest, I am starting to feel a little restless, as I usually do mid-season.  I have the itch to start my summer shopping!  But for now, I’m doing a lot of browsing (dangerous!) and keeping a running list of things I just gotta have.

How about you?  Are you surprised by your most worn pieces this season?  Is there anything in your closet you haven’t touched?

  1. A mid-season assessment is an excellent idea. I don’t often wear skirts or dresses and yet I have 5 pieces in this capsule wardrobe. I’m going to swap one each of them for one pair of grey jeans. I have also realised I have either merino or summery tops but actually need long sleeved cotton tops so will look at this too. Thanks for the reminder to tweak this process till it works!

    1. make it work for you!! sounds like you know what you want – great ideas 🙂

  2. I am going to pretend that I am hip and current by calling my wardrobe a capsule wardrobe rather than what it actually is (I’m SO picky that I never find clothing that likes me.) …….What should one pack for L.A in May…beaches, amusement parks, and the Sequoia mountains with kids….

    1. haha i WISH i had that picky problem. as for packing – the weather should be nice, i would be shocked otherwise. so i’d bring a pair of jeans, a pair of comfy pants (like leggings or loose pants), shorts, a couple tanks and tees with sweatshirts (for chilly mornings), a pair of sneakers and a pair of sandals/flip flops. maybe a sundress that can go from day to evening in case you have a nice dinner?

also thank you for sparking the idea of an LA packing list! <3 i'll be putting that together soon!

  3. Haven’t pulled off the capsule thing yet. I did cull quite a bit of clothes I haven’t worn, but…. My shifting weight makes commitment to a certain number of pieces hard. I do re-wear many items over and over, and I can collect information about my style based on that. Maybe someday I’ll manage a capsule wardrobe. Until then, I’ll just observe what others do, biding my time. Also, my closet is kind of big, which makes it easy to be lazy.

    1. a big closet would definitely hinder my capsule skills! 😉

  4. Thank you for this post! I’m into my 2nd capsule and I find that I like it far less than the last time. I think I kept too many wintery things because we got our one week of rain in Northern CA the week I did it. The first capsule I was totally stoked to get dressed every morning and I’m not feeling it as much. I think I might need to loosen up and do a mid-season re-evaluation like you did. Thank you again–I really love your blog!

    1. thank you! and yes, make it work for you. enjoy!
