Ugly Sandals

Oooh this week. It was a tough one. I won’t bore you with all the gory details, but I will say that by Friday, I was freakin’ D-O-N-E with everything and everyone. Calgon take me away. But we had weekend plans for the first time in about a million years, so I had to pull myself together. Luckily I did because we had fun. A nice weekend, with Stevie spending some time at grandma’s so we could catch up with some vaccinated friends and have some good food and cocktails. I also squeezed in a nap (!!!) and forgot to watch the Oscars. But I watched Cool Runnings again. I don’t care what anyone says, that movie holds up. Haha. I wouldn’t say I feel totally ready to start another week, but hey. It comes whether we want it or not! Hope yours is a good one.

Eating

I got to 2 of my 3 planned NYT recipes this past week. And they both turned out pretty good! But not as good as the birthday pizza for Paul, that I didn’t have to lift a finger for. I’m typically a cheap Domino’s type of gal, but every once in awhile we splurge on the good stuff. And Prime Pizza does not disappoint!! Their square pizza crust is so delightful, it seriously doesn’t even need toppings. Totally drool-worthy and worth the extra dough (pun intended).

Wearing

Not gonna lie, I was pretty stoked on my outfits this week. Not only did I get dressed, which feels like a huge accomplishment in itself these days, but I liked what I was wearing! I also made a fun IG reel with my husband featuring the Wendy Coverall from ABLE and to let people know about their Mother’s Day Sale. Right now, you can get 25% off sitewide, or 30% off with the code JAANAMOM30. If you order by Tuesday 4/27, you’ll get guaranteed delivery for Mother’s Day as well! You can view links to my most recent outfits here.

Buying

I am happy to say, I have reached a decision — we have a winner in my own personal ugly sandals contest! I mentioned last week that I had ordered a few pair of these “dad sandals” to try, just to make sure I covered my bases, and here is how they ranked (with no pictures on me, because I’m a terrible blogger).

4th Place

Tony Bianco Hiranni Black Sheep Nappa
These were my favorite sandals on paper. I think I mostly loved the styling on their website, and they are the ones that originally sold me on the idea of trying the trend. However, my usual size 40 was just a teeny bit too small and neither the leather straps nor footbed felt very comfortable. I maybe could have sized up, but because of the quality I wasn’t really that motivated to try. I could not picture myself wearing these around Europe. Do I have plans to go to Europe? No. But a good shoe needs to be comfortable enough to. Hello.

3rd Place

Vagabond Shoemakers Erin Slingback
These ones might be mislabeled on the Nordstrom website, because I ordered my usual size 9.5, but received a size 41 (which is more like a 10.5) So they were quite big. And while I liked the footbed, the straps were just a little stiff straight out of the box. I’m sure they would soften up with time, but who has that really. I also wanted sandals with that little extra detail of the quilting, so back they went.

2nd Place

Steve Madden Margie
These extra ugly sandals ranked WAY higher than I was expecting! I really liked the gold buckle detail on a similar pair, often worn by @missy_elz, and again her styling is what made me feel excited about them. When they arrived, I sort of laughed to myself. Definitely felt like they were too blingy for me to pull off. But wearing them around the house, I couldn’t get over how ridiculously comfortable they were. So I figured this might be a situation where I just needed to wear them and desensitize myself to the look. I was definitely getting used to the idea when I spotted one last pair I wanted to try.

1st Place

MANGO Quilted Strap
Ding ding ding! These sandals hit all the right notes! The quilted detail that I really liked. Very comfortable footbed with soft, cushy straps. Sizing was spot on. The price was reasonable. A good blend of ugly and sporty that just worked. I’m very happy with them and look forward to wearing them all around Europe, I mean Burbank.

That’s about all I’ve got for tonight! Will you be jumping on the ugly sandals trend or secretly judging me? HAHA.

loves,
jaana

  1. Ha ha, I think as far as I am going is a pair of TEVA’s!!
I hope to re-wear “new” to me again sandals that I did not wear last year in quarantine.

Love your outfits above and hope you have a better week!

    1. Love Tevas! And enjoy your “new” sandals — NON-quarantine style!!

  2. I’m jumping right on it! As a matter of fact, I, too, was browsing for some hideous sandals today, so i can’t believe how cute and timely your post is.
I’m 5’2″, though, so I’m leaning toward an ugly pair with a platform. I saw some crazy high ones on the Doc Marten’s website that I’m lusting over, and some cute ones by Teva, but I also really like the lower ones you’ve featured here. I just love your style. Thanks for the great post, and I hope you have an awesome week. xoxo

    1. I think I know just the dr martens you’re speaking of and love the platform idea! 😍
