White Outfit

As quarantine drags on and the news reports continue to worsen, I can’t help but feel a bit lost. I’ll be the first to admit that parenting full-time with no other outlet can make me feel a bit miserable. I keep trying to convince myself that I just need to snap out of it. Like if I could just turn my attitude around, that would make all the difference. And it does — temporarily. I make lists of things I want to accomplish and all the ways I could keep myself busy or the new things I could learn. But my time is limited, my motivation is short lived, and the overwhelmed feelings are quick to return.

Normally when I’m having a rough go, I tend to acknowledge/blab/overshare/embrace the discomfort because it’s important for my own processing. But the thing is, this way of life is something I’ve never equipped myself to handle! So it’s definitely been a learning experience. A very loooong learning experience that is somehow dragging on and flying by at the same time. I know it’ll all be fine and we’ll get on the other side of this eventually. I think I’m putting pressure on myself to seize the opportunity of having no other commitments to do something great. But honestly, just existing feels pretty dang tiring right now.

outfit notes

Even though it’s wildly impractical, no summer capsule would be complete without an all white outfit! As I was trying to figure out the right way to wear a white outfit, I first tried no accessories, but it just didn’t feel pulled together. So instead I wanted to try some accessories that would enhance the look and not distract from the simplicity of the white outfit. Once I added the thin tan belt, it immediately made the outfit look more intentional, while still keeping the look neutral/simple. And yes, I own TWO belts now. It’s been quite the development.

I’ve mentioned before that these shorts have a hole in the bum, so I’m still looking for a new pair with a slightly longer inseam. For the time being, they get the job done. The play-cars-and-sit-around-the-house-all-day job.

allyship notes

Have you guys caught Padma’s new show Taste the Nation? If you get a chance to watch Episode 4, it includes a mini education about the Gullah Geechee people of South Carolina. The rice farms built there (among other things) can be credited to Black slaves, who not only adapted but even created their own language to communicate with other slaves from different villages. Being of Gullah decent is often looked down on and they are trying to turn that image around and embrace their culture. The episode offers some back story, triumphs, and the struggles Black families face living there now. All topped off with some amazing looking soul food.

  1. Hope you and your family are well. Appreciate your consistent ally ship notes. I wanted to point you in the direction of @theconsciouskid and their IG post on June 15. They talk about what language to consider when trying to talk about the enslavement of Black people. Not sure what language Taste the Nation used as I haven’t started watching that show. Take care.

    1. Thank you for taking the time to point me in the right direction! Going to look now.
